Knicks eye Elton Brand for general manager job

Leon Rose, new president of the New York franchise, would have him among the candidates for the job

The suspension of the NBA as well as its isolation due to the coronavirus health crisis has come at a difficult time for the New York Knicks. Those from the Big Apple, after many years of navigating aimlessly, wanted to start a new path with Leon Rose at the helm, who has officially held the position of team president since March 1. Well, his work has been abruptly interrupted when he had barely started.

Rose's plan was to get an overview of the franchise's situation before making drastic decisions; However, this analysis will have to wait until the pandemic subsides and he can meet face to face with several of the employees as well as the players. Moving forward in these circumstances is difficult, but in the absence of certainty it seems that at least he is creating a list of candidates to accompany him on the project. Along these lines, Stefan Bondy of New York Daily News points out that Rose would have Elton Brand among his candidates to fill the position of general manager of the Knicks.

If Brand is his chosen one, taking him to Madison Square Garden will not be easy. At 41 years old, Brand is currently the general manager of the Philadelphia 76ers, where he also has a contract for the 2020-21 season, which undoubtedly seems to close the door on his arrival to the New York team. In this regard, the aforementioned journalist points out that Rose would be attentive to whether the contractual situation changes; That is, if he is fired after the playoffs.

The reality is that by his own will – we mean by forcing his exit – it is difficult for Brand to change one job for the other. In Philadelphia, where he has been GM since 2018, he is the leader of the office. If he went to the Knicks, he would be someone who worked for Rose; That is, his status would go down.

Less doubts are raised by the fact that starting next season there will be a new general manager on the Knicks. Rose has arrived with the intention of turning the franchise around 180 degrees, something for which he sees it as essential to put an end to everything that sounds like the old regime. With that goal, a new tenant for the bench – Tom Thibodeau has been mentioned a lot – as well as new blood in the office – current GM Scott Perry seems to have his days numbered – is the route to follow.
