According to ESPN‘s Shams Charania, the guard has signed a five-season contract extension worth a total of $139 million, a figure with which OKC rewards his excellent work on defence.

Just in: Oklahoma City Thunder All-Defensive guard Cason Wallace has agreed to a five-year, $139 million rookie-scale contract extension, agents Jeff Schwartz, Max Lipsett and Marcus Monk of Excel Sports Management tell ESPN. https://t.co/vCNVSJjp0q
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) October 19, 2026

For part of the summer it looked as though the franchise did not want to tie itself to this contract, letting Wallace become a restricted free agent in 2027 and, as other teams have done with players whose rookie deals are running out, try to negotiate on the cheap. However, they have finally decided to deal with the situation now, avoiding potential complications and locking in the continuity of every member of their starting five.

The guard earned this big contract with his performance during the 25-26 season, in which he firmly established himself as one of the best perimeter defenders in the world. Averaging 1.9 steals and 4.4 deflections per game, he became a fundamental piece of a defence as disruptive as OKC’s, to the point that the franchise decided over the summer to part ways with key man Lu Dort in order to bet on him for the future, something in which his greater impact on offence also weighed.

Shedding salary?

However, the moves made this summer do not look like they will be enough. Following this extension and with Shai’s new contract taking effect, the Thunder project spending of around $260 million for the 27-28 season, in which the second apron is estimated at around $233 million. It is therefore not only an enormously expensive roster, but one that is very difficult to manage and that will likely require acting before the problem arrives.

This makes Oklahoma a team to watch closely during the regular season, as they may well be active in looking for ways to gradually free up their cap. The question is whether they can do so without losing any of the pieces that make them a roster with so many resources and one that strikes such fear into a playoff series. And if the price to pay is reducing their ring chances in 2027, is it worth paying it?

The Thunder tie down the guard, but their salary situation heading into 2027-28 is starting to look problematic

[9
26,8
post-140","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","tag-cason-wallace","tag-oklahoma-city-thunder","no-featured-image-padding","resize-featured-image
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
