The money keeps rolling in as the start of the new regular season approaches, and the sums some players are commanding shouldn’t surprise NBA fans.

However, former Orlando Magic star Dwight Howard has weighed in on the subject, essentially saying he never received a contract that reached the $100 million mark.

To put things in perspective about how life has changed overall—especially salaries for today’s mid-to-high-level players—here are some numbers Howard handled over his NBA career:

  • He earned a total of $245 million during his NBA run.
  • His largest renewal was 5 years, $88 million in 2013 with the Houston Rockets.
  • His rookie extension was 5 years, $83 million with the Orlando Magic.
  • As a veteran, he signed the following deals:
    • 2 years, $11 million with Washington in 2018.
    • 1 year, $2.5 million with the LA Lakers in 2019.
    • 1 year, $2.5 million with Philadelphia in 2020.
    • 1 year, $2.6 million with Philadelphia in 2021.

The current market

A quick comparison between what the center signed when he was active from 2004 to 2021 and the salaries being handed out today, especially to the league’s “new arrivals.”

These deals are skyrocketing—some look inflated. To name a timely example: Devin Booker, who is only 28, has ensured at least $535 million over his pro career.

This past summer, he agreed to a 2-year, $150 million extension with Phoenix after previously securing $217 million from the Arizona franchise.
