Greece has complicated its path with a loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Greek National Team announced moments before tipoff that it would be without Giannis Antetokounmpo, who is dealing with knee soreness. Obviously, both the injury and the result directly affect Spain’s aspirations at EuroBasket, as they face Italy today and close out the first phase against Greece next Thursday.
Greece, which holds a 3-1 record to lead the group, has now put that top spot in jeopardy. That’s why the national press was concerned about Antetokounmpo’s status for the game against Spain. “He’ll be there,” was the emphatic declaration from Vasilis Spanoulis. The Greek head coach did not offer further details on the injury.
Giannis Antetokounmpo already sat out the game against Cyprus—little more than a formality for most teams in the tournament—to rest. This time, it appears to be due to real discomfort, but given the circumstances, it’s not far-fetched to think that if it had been a do-or-die clash, the two-time NBA MVP would have played.
In his appearances against Italy and Georgia, Giannis has averaged 29 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 3 assists.
