Jalen Williams Hit by Cruel Injury Blow

Nobody inside Paycom Center had much to celebrate after the Thunder’s 108-101 win over the Clippers. How could they, having just witnessed one of the most horrific-looking injuries in recent NBA history? Jalen Williams drove to the basket, was fouled and landed awkwardly on his left leg, which bent at a completely unnatural angle, leaving everyone in attendance in shock.

Williams could only cover his mouth with his hands as he looked down at his injured leg. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander struggled to hold back tears, and the mood, even among the opposition, was one of complete shock. Medical staff attended to the guard immediately, and he left the court on a stretcher to a standing ovation. A few minutes later, a game that suddenly seemed insignificant came to an end.

“We’re not doing great,” was all Mark Daigneault could say about the incident. Shai, for his part, had more to say.

“I feel terrible for him. It’s going to be very tough to lose a player of his calibre, but he’s not gone for good. He’ll come back better than ever, we know that. We just have to hold on until then,” said the Canadian. “He’s had really bad luck, but he’s prepared for this. He loves to play and he loves to compete. That’s what defines him.”

The franchise has yet to provide an official diagnosis, but the disturbing nature of the injury raises fears of a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Williams’ absence was already a major blow to the Thunder last season. Limited to just 33 regular-season appearances, the guard struggled to regain full fitness for the playoffs, where further physical problems left Oklahoma City weakened in their bid to defend their title.

Oklahoma City have proved they can remain competitive without him, but last season demonstrated just how important Williams is when facing the league’s strongest opponents. For now, all that remains is to await an official diagnosis and hope the injury is not as serious as it appeared.
