Timberwolves to be without Anthony Edwards for two months

The Minnesota Timberwolves have not taken long to suffer a first setback after their promising start to the season. Despite his excellent form, Anthony Edwards appeared to be playing through some discomfort in his right knee, which has been confirmed as something serious and will require him to undergo an arthroscopic procedure. According to ESPN reporter Shams Charania, he will be sidelined for two months.

Edwards began to show signs of discomfort in the win over the Raptors, and the Minneapolis side even listed him as questionable on the injury report ahead of Monday’s trip to Cleveland. However, after scoring 47 points in that game, the guard gave everything but cause for concern about his physical condition, making this news a real surprise. Although, with a bit of hindsight, it was a complaint that could have been expected to appear.

This is the same knee that made Ant miss 21 games of last regular season, a joint in which he had therefore already been carrying problems and which he apparently aggravated in the first game of this regular season. So, after trying to play through the discomfort for a few days, the guard has decided to tackle the situation as soon as possible, sacrificing the first months of competition so he can arrive in perfect condition for the decisive stretch.

No individual awards

As a result, Edwards gives up the chance of contending for individual awards at the end of the season, as he will undoubtedly miss more than the 17 games the 65-game rule allows. However, this is a concession he has shown himself willing to make, stressing that his main goal is to fight for the ring and not for an MVP. And that is despite the fact that, with the 33.3 points he was averaging, this was by no means out of the question.

The decision also has financial implications, as not making All-NBA will prevent Ant from signing a super-max extension next year, which would have guaranteed him $304m over five years. That extension will, however, become a possibility for him again in 2028 if he returns to the All-NBA teams.
